frequently asked questions

How does the College currently teach students during COVID?

From September 2020, we have been offering a Week A/B model. Half of the students are physically in College one week and the other half follow the timetable remotely, logging in to access a live stream of the lessons. Remote teaching sessions are delivered using a variety of methods including including our Virtual learning environment and Microsoft Teams. We have already expanded, improved and developed our online and remote teaching and learning provision over several months. Now that we are again in national lockdown we have continued to teach remotely and believe that we are significantly ahead of other providers in this respect so moving to 100% online delivery is not a challenge for us. We are confident that our students will reap the advantages and benefits of this and will ultimately be in a very good place for achievement and onward progression after this academic year. We will continue to invest times, resources and effort into ensuring that we can deliver the very best provision for our learners.

What will happen if I do not achieve the minimum entry requirements for my chosen course?

Every summer, students worry that they will not be able to access a College place if their GCSE results were not as expected. Please do not worry!

At August Enrolment, which takes place around GCSE Results Day, you will have the opportunity to discuss your study programme with a lecturer.

We have courses at every level and we will find you a suitable place.

How many GCSEs do I need to study A Levels?

All of our courses have individual entry requirements; it is important you check these through our guides and information sheets on the website.  To study A Levels with us, we expect you to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language and Maths.

What happens if I don’t pass my GCSE in English and/or Maths, can I still come to New College?

The short answer is yes, but you may need to change your study programme if you don’t meet the published minimum entry requirements for your chosen course.  We have many Level 2 courses for you to choose from – vocational qualifications which can be studied alongside retakes in the above subjects, or if you prefer, you can study GCSE subjects with us. In either case, we will work with you to improve your GCSE grade in English and/or Maths.

How many A Levels do I need to study?

All of our A Level pathways include 3 A Level subjects or equivalents. This will make you a full time student and give you the opportunity to potentially attend university after you complete studies with us.  Very able students (those achieving six or more grade 7-9s) will be encouraged to join our High Flyers programme and undertake additional qualifications such as the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
