frequently asked questions
What will I be paid?
The minimum wage for an apprentice is £4.15 per hour. If you are over 19, you can only be paid this in your first year. In your second year, you must be paid the minimum wage for your age. Many apprentices are paid much more than the minimum wage though, with salaries of £18k a year or more, depending on industry type and level.
How many hours per week will I work?
An apprentice will need to work a minimum of 30 hours per week.
When will I attend College?
This will depend on the subject you study; usually it’s once per week for a half or full day. Some however, are once a fortnight.
Are my College sessions added on top of my 30+ working hours per week?
No, your College sessions are included in your working week.
Am I paid for my time at College?
The taught sessions are part of your working week, so you’re paid for being in College.
I achieved a grade D/3 in Maths, will this affect my chances of getting an Apprenticeship?
Not necessarily, you can do Functional Skills in Maths/English as part of your apprenticeship. As long as you can show you will be able to achieve them during the apprenticeship.
What do the different levels mean?
- Level 2 is the equivalent to a GCSE
- Level 3 is the equivalent to an A Level
- Level 4/5 is on par with a foundation degree
How long does an Apprenticeship last?
- Level 2 = 12-15 months
- Level 3/4 = 18-24 months
- Level 5 = 24+ months
Will I have a permanent job at the end of my Apprenticeship?
You are hired on an employment contract for the duration of your apprenticeship. On the adverts there will be information about future opportunities, which could include progression to a higher apprenticeship or a permanent job opportunity.
